the clip on You Tube of “My Green Fedora” only consists of the Joe Penner impression and it isn’t the entire cartoon.
Joe Penguin is a parody of Joe Penner. There’s a cartoon on You Tube that the Warner Brothers people did centering on Joe and it’s called “My Green Fedora”. Mel Blanc was actually on Joe’s radio program…Mel did the voice of Goo-Goo the Duck based on the “Wanna Buy a Duck?” phrase that Joe popularized.
Joe passed away at an incredibly young age…36 {?}…of heart problems, in 1941. There’s a web-site dedicated to him on-line by a guy named Craig Hodgkins that I came across.
That’s a VERY GOOD comment, I commend you for being in the spirit of this outstanding spoof of radio and the screen at this time Many others making comments also appreciate the brilliant puns and satire of the characters.. of which remarkably (after 72 years) one of them still survives.
We all remember seeing Fred McFurry on “My Three Cubs.”
Too bad i never saw it in syndication, the only time I’ve seen this cartoon on television (a couple of times) was the older aap print. It appeared that way on the laserdisc collection as well. For a while before that I was wondering what the whole rendition sounded like.
I know the 1995 dubbed version print, the one that Turner/Time Warner did, did restore those opening seconds.
I was glad to see those first few seconds restored on this release, becuase I had never heard this musical cue on any other cartoon prior.
I remember seeing that this cartoon had the first few seconds of its opening studio logo gone when I’d seen it during the old AAP (Associated Artists Productions) days. And no AAP logo preceded it.
Owl Cott would reappear as a human in “Have You Got Any Castles?”.
Nice film.
This is one of the first cartoons where Mel Blanc’s vocal versatility was really on display, doing all but four of the celebrity singers’ voices in the boxes (including Ruby’s squealing) during the cartoon’s title number, along with assorted other characters during the rest of the short.
I was exactly the same way!
Wonderful. I haven’t seen this cartoon in two decades. I can’t thank you enough. “Greetings and salutations” Perfect. Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah.
“Billy Goat & Ernie Bear” are “caricatures” of the real Billy Jones & Ernie Hare, ‘MrLogo’. They were a popular singing duo on radio during the ’20s and ’30s, known as “The Happiness Boys” (named for one of their early sponsors, “Happiness Candy”). They “signature” number was “How D’You Do”….
What’s up with that number Bear and Goat did?
The movie star parody cartoons from WB were seen more frequently during the ’70s. Most kids knew who Bogart, Cagney, Bette Davis and Gable were back then, because their films were always being aired on television. The radio stars of yesteryear weren’t as lucky.
I remember seeing this during the ’70s and could hardly recognize any of them. Listening to old-time radio programs as an adult helps makes it much easier now.
What are the lyrics of that song Martha Bray’s singing?
This whole thing is so cute and brilliantly written! I wish cartoons like this were still being made! I laughed at all the celebrity appearances and how they got animal mixed in with their own name! Like Eddie Gander(Eddie Cantor), Sophie Turkey(Sophie Tucker), Dick Fowl(Dick Powell), Al Goatson(Al Jolson), Ruby Squealer(Ruby Keeler), Louella Possums(Louella Parsons) etc…
I like the host, Ben Birdie. : )
i’m 31 and have listened to old-time radio and have watched these cartoons for years and years. some of the caricatures went over my head until I did some research and found out who they were. i knew who the fox was…Fred Allen…the joke was about Fred’s notoriety for being censored as Portland tells him “Mr Allen, you’re singing the wrong song!” and he hollers: “Why doesn’t someone tell me these things!!”.
It’s sad though, it’s like a history lesson from this point in time. if you dont show the li’ ones, how will they ever know?
This is true. But I was born early enough to know who most of these people were. Their movies were played a lot on a little known channel in LA. “KTLA” had the Family Film Festival so I was exposed not only to all the old actors but cartoons as well. WB’s old cartoons were played endlessly on channel 7 on saturdays.
I think I understand why this cartoon rarely aired on TV. There were so many dated jokes, and pop culture references in this cartoon, a kid today wouldn’t understand much of it. I can recall only seeing this cartoon once years ago, back when I was four.
I love this cartoon. The frong and the fish were the ones that cracked me up the most.
Me too and I’m 21!
